Character Education:

Transforming Tiny Lives

Girl on buffalo

A story is told of a politician in Bihar who casually asked a young lad aged ten, what his dreams for the future were. His surprising reply was – “I could be a policeman or a gangster; it depends who gets me first.”

The 2005 World Bank report points out that only 54% of the children of Bihar attend

school;  for every 2 boys only 1 girl goes to school.  While children in urban India (about 28% of India today) have tall dreams about their future, there are still overwhelming challenges in getting Bihar’s kids to the verandah of an institution of learning (90% of Bihar stay in villages).  Bihar’s literacy rate is a dismal 33%; rural rates drop below 20% and for women in villages could be well around 10%.

Uniforms and lunchIt is within the context of such a challenging need that NIEA has been able to provide primary and secondary education to about 2500 children on a daily basis through a network of thirteen schools.  These institutions are typically in rural areas and provide eager students a first time experience to gain academic input and lay a foundation for a poverty free future

Uniforms and lunch

(39% of Biharis live on less than dollar a day – approx 35 million).
The majority of these children also receive a warm meal, if not two, uniforms occasionally and twice a year medical check up to screen for preventable diseases and give immunizations.
The results are thrillingly exciting!  Sheela or Murmu, not yet in their teens testify that their lives are on an upward curve.  Sanjay 15, along with 3 others passed Class 10 from our village school program.  They were the first group of children who had ever reached Class 10 from their own village.
Anil Sharma and Pramod MandalWhile addressing all their physical needs, it is important that we be concerned about their character development.  With this in mind a 7 -year character curriculum on 36 themes is prepared – ranging from punctuality to honesty; from goodwill to patience; perseverance to cleanliness.  Age -graded instruction through work books is imparted to make children better at heart.

Anil Sharma and Pramod Mondal

Pramod Mondal who overseas about 600 kids in NIEA run schools with about 40 staff is very optimistic about the results.  A total of 2500 kids are benefited.  The Biblical instruction and values provided in their formative years is welcomed by children and their parents.
Dorm parents, carefully trained also contribute to the  spiritual needs of children in Homes – orphan, destitute or disadvantaged, about 750 across the nation.
We gratefully recognize the Manthei family’s investment in NIEA’s children and hope to extend Character Education to other ministries, focusing on the 4/14 window.
Village kids are given basic education in 13 NIEA established village schools in Bihar. Thousands of lives are transformed.  Please pray for this fruitful ministry.

"Listen to God and to One Another"

Asia Evangelical Alliance

“Listen to God and to One Another.”  That was the theme of the strategic Mission Commission Consultation 2009 of Asia Evangelical Alliance  held in Bali, Indonesia in November.  This significant event helped the mission leaders and strategists from 10 South Asian nations to understand the role of the Asian Church in global mission.  Based on that understanding they decided to encourage and facilitate the churches for effective kingdom investments in 2010 and beyond.
Paper presentations, plenary feed backs and small groups for prayer and for seeking God’s guidance  were special features of the event.
Four task forces were formed to plan strategies.

Dr. Alex  Philip of NIEA, as the  leader of Asia’s Emerging Leaders’ Task Force, plays a key role in planning the future programs.   Mr. Lawrence Ko as  Chairman,  Rev. Dino Touthang as  Vice – Chairman and Dr. Bambang Bundijanto as Director will provide leadership for the task forces to carry the process forward.
Rev. Dr. Richard Howell of Evangelical Fellowship of India serves as the General Secretary of Asia Evangelical Alliance.
The working papers published during the following months will feed into major mission events in the future especially the next key meeting of Asia Mission Commission in Tokyo in 2010.
NIEA’s ministry in India and the neighboring Asian countries in the future will greatly be influenced by the decisions of the Mission  Commission of AEA .  Please pray fervently so that these developments will expedite our ultimate and urgent mission of preaching the Gospel to all nations!
