Akilesh's Tale

Akilesh's smile

Fever…coughing…loss of weight… Such was life for 12 year old Akilesh. Severe sores covered his chest and neck and he had been told he had the dreadful Tuberculosis. Akilesh grew up in Madhepura and was from a family of 8 with six brothers.  His mother worn out from daily labor and multiple pregnancies in close succession was a pathetic site herself.  When Akilesh would cough blood, they would hope for a better day, which they knew would never come.

It was surprising when Shambu one of NIEA’s Church planters in the region came to this unreached village to consider the possibility of sharing Jesus’ love in tangible ways – education, medical services, or literacy among this underserved poor community.   He was surprised when the village headman told him “Akilesh has been abandoned by his own parents – who are waiting for him to die!”

In their 2005 report, the World Bank stated that Bihar was endemic for Tuberculosis and that in some areas as high as 1 in 100 people had TB.  Though treatable and fully curable, the poor often have limited access to free medical aid and even if they do they need constant supervision and assistance to complete successfully the minimum six month regimen of combination drugs.  Akilesh‘s village was full of TB patients.  Several of the hundred odd village huts had similar stories, for many the damage had been done and siblings had died.  None had been treated.  Bihar has the lowest per capita income for any state in the country at US$ 50 with 39% of Bihar’s 90 million earning less than a dollar a day (2005 World Bank statistics).

Akilesh’s TB of the lung had also adjoining infection of neck lymph nodes.  Exuding cheesy pus, these multiple sores had become infected repeatedly turning his neck into an awful twist with a face contracture as well.  He wasted away on a mat outside his home and over three months was reduced to a bag of skin and bones.

Recognizing the urgency of the situation, Shambu swung into action.  Immediately arrangements were made for the young lad to be transported to NIEA’s Samaritan’s Inn – a home of refuge for the medically destitute some 65 miles away which would become Akilesh’s home for the following months.  Every day was a battle of survival.  The dedication, hard work and constant prayer by the staff of the facility finally saw the light of day!

Akilesh was in Church last week along with his Uncle.  Both were grinning – as they worshipped the Living God who had touched the lad, they knew he had been snatched from the paws of death.  As the service concluded, the Uncle with tears in his eyes said, my boy is healed and I am taking him home now.  I have another similar child at home, can I bring him in now?  <><

This Samaritan’s Inn is a place where Christ’s love, grace, and mercy is shown by providing a place to stay, good health care, and medication to individuals for no charge and where the sick are rehabilitated as well.

Hope for Asha

When Asha was brought as a four year old child for admission in NIEA’s Orphan Home she appeared like any one of the thirty odd kids who had turned up for the admission interview  that day.  It was only several days later, on closer evaluation that care-givers in the home noticed Asha’s inability to communicate or interact with girls of similar age.  Over the past three years,  Asha’s condition has not deteriorated significantly, but she still certainly does have marked speech impairment, communication challenges and difficulties in relating to peers and dorm parents.  Statistics indicate that Asha has about 26 million others like herself in India who desperately need help.

Today little Asha (Asha is Hindi for Hope) has a home for herself and five other inmates who have been abandoned and left in the care of their Creator.  NIEA’s new home -  ASHA BHAWAN  (Home of Hope)  Purnia, Bihar will provide abandoned children with permanent disabilities – a place to be cared for and looked after the rest of their lives.  Both male and female Staff at Asha Bhawan have been assigned to care for the needs of the children around the clock and to provide for their needs as appropriate.  Clean food, clean clothing, a safe environment and some occupational engagement all provide these little ones an opportunity to thrive and to be cared for.

Developmental Disabilities are caused due to insult to the brain and damage to the central nervous system.  This could be due to several factors which deprive the brain of oxygen before, during or after birth. The resulting disabilities are Autism, Cerebral Palsy, Mental Retardation and Multiple Disabilities.  These are neither diseases nor contagious nor progressive. They cannot be cured by drugs or surgery. But early detection and training improves outcomes.  The services of Physio-Occupational and Speech Therapist, Community Based Rehabilitation Workers and Special Educators help to evaluate and provide a better quality of life

In Purnia, Bihar – ASHA BHAWAN has opened its doors for those who are alive physically but challenged mentally or differently abled.  They communicate often with awkward sounds, often walk in clumsy manners and spill their food while eating.  Yet they seem to know the invisible language of love – they smile, talk excitedly some gibberish when happy and though distant – yet find a place close to one’s heart.  In this facility to house ten inmates, six have been admitted and three more will be added soon.

Ø    Pray as plans to build a small home for them on a separate piece of land is finalized and developed further.  This will be able to accommodate a total of 20 such inmates and will provide them with some space for agriculture, gardening, leisurely walking etc.
Ø    Pray for sponsors and well-wishers of this project who are keen to develop further this program in Bihar to be for God’s greater glory and honor.
